Ethiopia has announced a historic step towards securing its first UNESCO Global Geopark, following the reported acceptance of the Central Ethiopia Rift Valley Geopark's application at the 11th session of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council.

According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Council's decision marks a significant achievement in Ethiopia's efforts to protect its geological heritage and develop sustainable tourism. The designation process proceeds to UNESCO's Executive Board for final endorsement.

The development adds a new dimension to Ethiopia's internationally recognised natural and cultural attractions. Alongside its archaeological treasures, living traditions, historic monuments and biosphere reserves, the country's geological landscapes offer considerable potential for tourism, scientific research and education.

UNESCO Global Geoparks connect the protection of internationally significant geological heritage with education and sustainable development. Their value extends beyond the landscapes themselves: community participation and opportunities for local livelihoods are central to the geopark approach.

For Ethiopia's tourism industry, the Central Ethiopia Rift Valley Geopark presents an opportunity to diversify visitor experiences. Tour operators can help develop educational journeys and nature-based itineraries that connect geological interpretation with local culture, hospitality and conservation.

Responsible development could create opportunities for local guides, accommodation providers, artisans and other community enterprises. It could also strengthen cooperation among tourism businesses, researchers, public institutions and international partners.

The Ethiopian Tour Operators Association (ETOA) welcomes this milestone and congratulates the professionals, institutions, communities and partners whose work has advanced the initiative.

ETOA encourages its members and tourism stakeholders to support the protection and responsible promotion of Ethiopia's geological heritage. Careful planning, meaningful community involvement and strong visitor services will be essential to translating international recognition into lasting benefits.

As the designation process advances, the Central Ethiopia Rift Valley Geopark promises to become an important platform for sharing Ethiopia's geological story with the world while preserving it for future generations.
